    Modeling of cargo transport via molecular motors

    The motor protein kinesin-1 plays an essential role in transporting cellular cargoes within eukaryotic cells. A group of kinesins ``walking\u27 together can cooperatively transport various cellular cargo over relatively long distances. While much is known about the transport by individual kinesin-1 molecules, very little is known about the specific mechanisms of cooperative kinesin-based transport. Here, we developed a two-dimensional stochastic model of cargo transport via multiple kinesins. The simulation focuses on the modeling of quantum dot cargoes transported along a microtubule. We found that high motor densities lead to increased run lengths, increased association times and decreased velocities, and that our stochastic model recapitulates experimental data reasonably well

    TewaTalk: Preserving the Tewa Language through Mobile Technology

    The societal push for universal languages, known as a language shift, causes countries to rely on universal languages for communication over indigenous languages. As a result, the Tewa language, spoken by six Native American Pueblos in New Mexico, has been slowly declining over the last century. The goal of this project was to contribute to the preservation of Tewa by designing a mobile application and a supplementary website that would aid in language education. Detailed interactive mockups were first designed to help visualize the final products. The application was then programmed for the Android platform, and the website was created with Google Sites. After extensive prototyping, we created a functional application and an interactive website design with learning tools

    Mental Health First Aid USA: The Implementation of a Mental Health First Aid Training Program in a Rural Healthcare Setting

    Nearly one-quarter of adults in the United States suffer from a documented mental disorder. Consequently, anyone could encounter a person with symptoms of mental illness at some point as they carry out their daily life activities. Although laypersons may accurately identify physical illnesses, they may lack necessary skills to identify symptoms of mental disorders, or know how to adequately respond to persons in a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid USA is an evidence-based certification program designed to teach lay citizens to recognize certain symptoms of common mental illnesses, offer and provide first aid assistance, and guide a person toward appropriate services and other support. The program targets a broad audience, from teachers, police officers, clergy members, and healthcare professionals to the average citizen volunteer. This practice note describes a pilot implementation of Mental Health First Aid USA by a social worker at a rural hospital in Central California. The process and results of program implementation are discussed as well as implications for social work practice in rural healthcare settings

    Seeking Abraham: A Report of Furman University\u27s Task Force on Slavery and Justice

    After more than a year of study, the Furman University Task Force on Slavery and Justice presents its findings in this report. The report includes the Task Force’s values and process, a presentation of the history of Furman’s early ties to slavery, a number of short vignettes by individual Task Force members, and a number of recommendations for the university to address. Members of the Task Force represent diverse students and alumni, as well as faculty and staff. The report is the result of commissioning a history, activating student research projects, hosting scholars who consulted with the Task Force, creating oral histories and curating viewpoints, and attending Universities Studying Slavery, a consortium headquartered at the University of Virginia with more than 40 international colleges and universities. The university has made a commitment to serious consideration of the entire report

    Advances in Molecular Quantum Chemistry Contained in the Q-Chem 4 Program Package

    A summary of the technical advances that are incorporated in the fourth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program is provided, covering approximately the last seven years. These include developments in density functional theory methods and algorithms, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) property evaluation, coupled cluster and perturbation theories, methods for electronically excited and open-shell species, tools for treating extended environments, algorithms for walking on potential surfaces, analysis tools, energy and electron transfer modelling, parallel computing capabilities, and graphical user interfaces. In addition, a selection of example case studies that illustrate these capabilities is given. These include extensive benchmarks of the comparative accuracy of modern density functionals for bonded and non-bonded interactions, tests of attenuated second order Møller–Plesset (MP2) methods for intermolecular interactions, a variety of parallel performance benchmarks, and tests of the accuracy of implicit solvation models. Some specific chemical examples include calculations on the strongly correlated Cr2 dimer, exploring zeolite-catalysed ethane dehydrogenation, energy decomposition analysis of a charged ter-molecular complex arising from glycerol photoionisation, and natural transition orbitals for a Frenkel exciton state in a nine-unit model of a self-assembling nanotube

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    This paper presents a novel design for a Digital Delta Sigma Modulator (DDSM) which produces a spur-free spectrum for all constant inputs with higher order shaped additive LSB dither.We can increase the order of noise shaping of the applied dither to that of the modulator without any spurious tones appearing in the spectrum.     Utilization of TandemHeart in cardiogenic shock: Insights from the THEME registry.

    BACKGROUND: TandemHeart has been demonstrated to improve hemodynamic and metabolic complications in cardiogenic shock (CS). Contemporary outcomes have not been reported. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcomes of the TandemHeart (LivaNova) in contemporary real-world use. METHODS: We analyzed baseline characteristics, hemodynamic changes, and outcomes of all patients treated with TandemHeart who were enrolled in the THEME registry, a multicenter, prospective, observational study. RESULTS: Between May 2015 and June 2019, 50 patients underwent implantation of the TandemHeart device. 22% of patients had TandemHeart implanted within 12 h, 32% within 24 h, and 52% within 48 h of CS diagnosis. Cardiac index (CI) was significantly improved 24 h after implantation (median change 1.0, interquartile range (IQR) (0.5-1.4 L/min/m CONCLUSION: In a contemporary cohort of patients presenting in CS, the use of TandemHeart is associated with a 74% 30-day survival and a 66% 180-day survival
